OUR STORY
October 2002
"One, two, rock-step..."
We met at the Heights Community Center where
swing dancing is held every Tuesday night. My friend, Jenelle, and I
fell in love with the atmosphere and religiously began attending every
week. Adam had been introduced to swing through his sister-in-law,
Megan (who can still do a mean jitterbug!). He had about a year of
experience on us and fortunately, was one of the few boys that was
patient enough to teach us. Although I had trained in a dance studio...
dancing with a partner was far from natural for me. Adam was always
forgiving when I missed cues, tugs... practically all leads that a
follow should know. By the way: neither of us knew each other's names
for at least the first 8 months we danced together. He was shy and
mellow. I was social and flirty. We had nothing (and I mean
nada) in common but the love of swing dancing. When he grabs my
hand to dance my world is ok.
July 2004
"Hi Boyfriend. Hi Girlfriend"
Before Adam and I were "official", he decided
to take our friend, Billy, and I off of the dance floor and onto the
slopes. Adam attempted to teach us to snowboard at Angelfire Ski
Resort. After the trip, my little crush became a big crush. I returned
home bruised and confused. I told my mommy "I've got big plans for Adam
in the future. I'm going to marry him". Now if you knew me well or
even a tiny bit back then, this was a VERY sarcastic comment. Once
upon a time, I was a bit commitment phobic. Eek! Yet, my feelings
for him were unavoidable. Despite my kicking and screaming, Adam
convinced me that this was too good pass up. And, of course, we became
an "us".
January 2007
"Mine forever..."
Cloud nine. I had just been accepted into a
very pricey Dental Hygiene Program at UNM. Wahoo! Adam and I wanted to
take a "before we are too poor to afford Ramen Noodles" trip. We
decided to return to Angelfire Ski Resort as a couple. The ideal set-up
for an engagement was SO obvious. Still, I had no clue whatsoever. The
morning of the proposal, I was the most disgustingly ill I have been in
a decade! After emptying my stomach in the hotel, the hotel parking
lot, and in the pharmacy parking lot Adam came to my rescue. He cleared
out the pharmacy and pumped me full of medicine. Oh yes, it took some
MAJOR love to hold my hair back that long morning. Adam somehow
convinced me to take at least one trip up the slopes. I fell numerous
times. Finally, one fall I couldn't muster the strength to get up. Adam
sailed down the hill to meet me. I was weak, drugged up, and obviously
oozing with appeal. He knelt in front of me with both knees attached to
the snowboard. Before I knew it, he was reaching into his pocket for a
box and asking the question: "Will you do me the honor of being mine
forever and marry me?" Wow, it was perfect. Straight out of a romantic
girl movie! Well... almost. My adorable new fiancé attempted to
put the bright shiny diamond on the wrong hand. Sigh... this is
our crazy romantic comedy and nothing is
sweeter.  ☺
